    you can plug them in via USB otherwise though you can't

    I knew that much! Why is this not an option? I like to run full games for MLB The Show, for example, which was never a problem on PlayStation consoles, but it's always been an issue with XBOX.

    My Xbox controller generally turns off after I go idle for a few minutes but it doesnt do so when plugged in. So that is peculiar.

    Try the suggestions here and see if that helps?

    Xbox One controller shuts off while streaming video using a headset.

    To my knowledge Xbox controllers have always been designed to then off after several minutes of inactivity on the controller. Ive had the same issue in the past.
