    I have a unique issue.

    A few years ago when MS had the Live.com Profile pages, much like Facebook, I had an account that also became an Xbox account. The name I used for that account was the same as my page. I wanted to change my name to the one on that account but after
    the pages closed down I could not access that account or even the name ever again. I have over the years looking into this name and it will not appear as an active user, so it's still my name, but I can't use it.

    I would later change my MS Live account to make it my Xbox email address which was tied to that other account, so I'm wondering if there is a way to get back that account or name in some way so I can change my current Xbox Gamer tag to the one I had
    with the other account.

    Also at the time when I made the changes, I realized my dilemma.

    TLIs it possible to get back a Lost GamerTag that is tied to an email address I am using for... :DR;1. Created an MS Live account years ago and tied it to an Xbox Gamer Tag.

    2. When the social Live service went down, I changed my current email address to the MS Live Address.

    3. Gamer Tag tied to MS Live Account is lost.

    4. I want that Gamertag back so I can change my name to it.

    Thanks for reaching out to the Forums for advice on how to hopefully get your gamertag set to what you want it to be. I understand how this could be distressing as it's always comforting to use the same name when playing everything online. However, if your
    old profile had not been signed into for more than 2 years, it would have been closed and the gamertag would be unavailable until Xbox releases it as available in the future.

    They have updated the process of creating a gamertag though, and you should be able to claim the one you want albeit with a suffix added. For more information on our new gamertag update, check out

    If you don't access an account in a determined amount of time it will be deleted but the GT could be still on the servers somewhere. You can change the email associated with a Xbox GT but you have to access that account again in order to do it.
    This year MS did a cleanup on old accounts without recent logins so the bad news is that account has been already deleted
    To clarify, they did not recently clean up old accounts. There was a policy change on August 30, 2019. If a person does not sign into their Microsoft Account for 2 years, the account will be cleared which should release the gamertag as well. So 2021 would
    be the first year any gamertags are released.
