Is it possible for an xbox account set to chat with friends only to chat with friends on...

You can set it on the account privacy settings.

Please, enter this site: https://account.xbox.com/settings

On the Privacy Tab options, under "Others can":

"Other can communicate with voice, text, o invites" > Set it to Friends

Click Submit.

As for unwanted chat or contact:

You can set the online and privacy settings of your child's account to "Friends Only" or to "Block", so the kid can still play on the console, but will only be able to chat with known friends that are in his friend list and no one else, or he can't chat
at all, if that helps.

SOLUTION: My son's account was the default account signed in. Once I logged him out, it allowed me straight into party chat. His settings only allow chat with friends. Maybe my friends weren't his friends...???

I play SQDM with mic, but in party chat only with my buddy

(actually not "party chat", but there is a setting in Xbox for chatting with friends only)

Also be aware that there are two settings: Muting and blocking.

Muting "only" silences the voice chat of another person, so you can't hear them in party or in-game chat. That setting is useful if the player is constantly "noisy", because they have music playing in the background, or whatever else might be annoying during
a voice chat.

Blocking actually blocks the person from sending text messages etc.

If the other person uses multiple accounts to get around an account block, you can go to
https://account.xbox.com/settings and temporarily set your online and privacy settings to "Friends Only", so only known friends that are on your friend list can contact to you.
