Is it possible for an external hard drive to lock up the Xbox?

Does the PC recognize the external hard drive?

Does the external hard drive meet the specifications for the Xbox One?

That's not entirely true. You can use an external USB drive up to 2TB. The actual hard drive bay would be looking for an Xbox hard drive. It's never been possible to pop in a laptop hard drive and use it without some sort of modification which would put
you at risk for being banned.

The physical size of the drive (2.5"/3.5") does not technically matter.

Documentation online is unclear, but various sources elsewhere state that the
highest supported capacity is 8TB per hard drive. You can connect up to two external USB hard drives.

This theoretically gives the highest possible storage capacity of 18TB on the Xbox One. (8TB external + 8TB external + 2TB internal).
