Xbox One X ''swoosh'' fan noise, is this normal?

I have a project Scorpio edition Xbox one x which I have had since release day.

Since the first day the console has intermittently made a swoosh type fan sound when playing games and using apps, this is more prevalent when playing games in 4K.

It sounds as if the fan is speeding/revving up for a second or two then quickly slowing down. I assumed this was normal and was how the console expelled excess heat from the system as usually it runs quietly.

Can anyone give me a definitive answer as to whether this is normal for the console to do this?

    Thanks

Is it normal for the Xbox One Scorpio Edition console's fan to run a lot of the time

Hi ScottJayne2004, yes it is normal for the fan to run. It is expelling heat. Is the console well ventilated? Ensure it is not in a confined space like a bookshelf or TV cabinet of any kind.

    Pubg

    Hi there,

Purchasing any electronic item on Day One runs the same risk, this is not unique to the Xbox One X release - Prices drop after release, there are limited time specials offered, or a newer model comes out down the road.

    Same goes for automobiles.

The Scorpio edition is a limited edition console. No more will be made of that edition. Any user If you want an Xbox One X with PUBG, it won't say Project Scorpio on it.

Any user currently looking for a Project Scorpio edition console one month after release will most likely be paying a higher price for it than what it originally sold for.

Xbox one x scorpio edition dead after 20 mins of play

All issues point towards just the Scorpio Edition... I've read through countless threads of dead Xbox One X's, but none of them are for the 'normal' ones. I'm currently in the process of sorting out a return for mine. I'm so disappointed
    :(
Oh well, I've got a Scorpio edition and mine works just fine. Played all sorts of games on it since Tuesday for hours and hours. The console does not get really warm. There's warm air blowing out on the back but overall it only has one hot(ter) spot on top
and that's it. So I guess there's a specific batch of Scorpio editions that runs into this issue.

Xbox one X Shutting Down During Boss Fight

    Hi

    Is it a Scorpio Edition?

There are a lot of overheating problems with the scorpio unfortunately - something to do with the vapor chamber.

Best bet is, if its out of warranty, go to youtube and find a video on how to safely crack it open, and then give it a thorough cleaning.

My scorpio will freeze during high graphic loads in Destiny2, Borderlands and Forza, especially when outputting to 4k. And i also have mine sitting in clear air, airconditioned.

Also do away with the other fans....not only will they redirect the hot air back...but also cause more dust to be injected into the chassis....both undesireable.

Your best bet is to actually replace the main fan with a noctua - high throughput, low noise - super cool and reduces a massive amount of issues.

The same is true of the normal X but not to the same degree.

    Cheers
Its not a scorpio edition no, just a standard one x but i did get it on launch

xbox one x cooling fan speed up with noise!!!

    I've had 2 Xbox One X consoles: -

Scorpio - When playing One X enhanced games that stress the system, the fan would spike up really fast for a few seconds, then go back down to being almost silent again, and this would happen every so often.

Regular - The fan profile seems a lot more normal to me than the Scorpio I had. Instead of the fan spiking up super fast then going back down again, it increases gradually in speed as the system heats up and stays at that faster speed, only slowing down
once the system starts to cool down.

Both consoles were/are positioned vertically, using the official stand, on top of a long custom-made worktop in my gaming room, so there's ample ventilation on all sides.

If the noise was rated on a 1-10 scale, with the Scorpio I would say it was at a 1 the majority of the time, then it would spike up to a 7 or 8 for a few seconds here and there. With the regular console, it's like it slowly goes from 1 to 2, then from 2
to 3, as the console gets hot, but I never hear the fans spike up super loud and I would say that the noise never gets louder than a 3.

I much prefer the sound of the regular console to the Scorpio and it makes me wonder if the Scorpio had a faulty temperature sensor or fan controller. However, I did see a bunch of people on Reddit saying that there's did the same thing as mine, and a member
of the Xbox dev team said that the spikes were normal, so I don't know what the deal is there. My Scorpio died as it stopped outputting video, which was likely caused by a faulty GPU - perhaps that was heat related? - I really couldn't say for sure.
