Apart from the free trial when you buy a console or the occasional free weekend there is no way to get xbopx live for free

Njal is correct. The best way to get a "free" Xbox live gold subscription is to do Microsoft rewards. Without any sale or promotion it can take as little as 29K points to get an entire year of Xbox live.
