Is a Xbox profile a gamertag

I have been trying to add my cousin as my friend. I put his gamer tag or Xbox profile (I don't know) in search. But it says not available. I thought that Xbox profile and gamer tag was the same. Is it?

Im having trouble following what your saying.

Did you make a new xbox one gamertag, and all the games you played on the 360 were a different gamertag? If so I would think (IDK for SUre) that you would need to use the gamertag that you had for the 360.Click to expand...

NO. When you start playing an Xbox 360, bring up the Xbox 360 guide to sign in. If you don't see your profile click the Download Profile option. It will have you enter your email and password. Then you will be able to select your Gamertag to sign in. I didn't know it was that difficult?

You'll want to double check the spelling on his GT and make sure your not missing any letters numbers or spaces.

If all that checks out and you're using the right GT then have him try and add you as a friend instead.

It's very easy to change your account's Gamertag.

Press the Xbox  button to open the guide and go to Profile & System.

Select your Xbox profile (or select Choose a profile and sign in to your account).

Select My Profile > PersonalizeProfile and select your current gamertag.

Under Choose your new gamertag, enter your desired gamertag in the available text box and select Check availability.

You may receive a message that the gamertag you want is not available.

If so, try again until one is accepted.

On the next page, review what the gamertag looks like on Xbox services.

If you're happy with your new gamertag, select Change gamertag.
