Installing xbox one retail disc to xbox hard drive, and then downloading the purchase off xbox ...

I recently bought an xbox one, and i'm wondering if i'm able to install a retail disc to the system, and then download the purchase off xbox live? I do not have fast internet, and i'm not willing to wait for 30gb of data to complete. I'm wondering if a
retail disc will work to install that 30gb of data,instead of downloading it from xbox live?

why download on disc content to xbox one?

Hey there,

The disc must be installed because of load times - it's a lot quicker to read from the hard drive than from the disc. What's likely causing it to take a long time is that the Xbox is likely downloading and installing updates from the internet at the same
time. Some people report faster install times if you disconnect from Xbox Live (Settings > Network > Go Offline), installing from the disc, and then connecting and downloading/installing the update after (rather than trying to do both at the same time).

For the record, the PS4 has the same issue - games must be installed to the hard drive.

PS4 owners may want to upgrade their hard drives. Sony has confirmed that every game requires an installation, including games purchased at retail. The mandatory installation requirement is similar to Xbox One.

A new FAQ reveals that, "all PS4 Blu-ray Disc games must be cached to the hard drive to ensure a smooth gaming experience. However, certain titles may not require you to wait for the game data to be fully cached before starting gameplay. In order to start playing disc-based games, users will need to insert the game disc into PS4 just like on the PS3 system."

When you put a retail disc into your Xbox One, it will install the game from the disc. This should not use any internet data. However, once the game has been installed, the game may have title updates, which means that essentially you will have to download
these patches/updates.

If I'm correct in what your asking, you want to purchase a game of the Xbox Marketplace, but you don't really want to download the 30GB for it, you want to use a disc instead just for the install?

If that's a yes, then yes, you can do just that. You can either borrow the disc version from a friend or use a rental disc. Install the game to the hard drive and do the update as normal. Then once the game is installed, remove the disc and buy the digital
version. Your installed game will now be yours and you can play it without the original disc as the Xbox digital purchase unlocks it. This is one of the features of the Xbox One console.

Games purchased digitally will automatically download and install the updates.

But games you purchased retail (i.e. disc-based) will require you putting the disc in the drive in order to finish the installation of the update.

PS4 updates both digital and disc media games regardless. I wish Xbox One would do this.

I find it utterly annoying to have to feed disc after disc into the X1 just to finish the installation of the update.

Sorry, Original Xbox discs cannot be installed to the Xbox 360 hard drive via the disc drive. The only way to download those games to a hard drive is by purchasing them via the Xbox LIVE Marketplace.
