Installing games - no way to change directory for new content?

It may be a little bit more than just the update.

The error code your getting is because access is denied.

If you feel comfortable using the command prompt, the following will reset the access control list for the drive you are trying to use.

1. Open command window cmd with administrative rights (right click the start Window and select Command Prompt (Admin) ) or left click on Window and start typing "Cmd". The search will come up with CMD.exe and select run with Administrative Priviledges.
2. Use the Integrity Control Access Control Lists or "icacls" command to give access. This is needed after an upgrade or the introduction of a new disk created by a different user (or computer). Use the following command: icacls X:\ /T /C /RESET
3. Instead of "X" you should use your drive letter.
4. It takes a bit, minutes, so be patient.

Okay so I tried this CMD command, on both my C drive and D drive (the one on which I'm trying to change the download location for new content). Both times after finishing it said there were some errors processing some files.

Long story short it still doesn't let me change the install location for new content. Still the same error.

And I don't know if it's correlated, but after running these commands I noticed that there were some Windows updates available. I tried installing them but both gave me the error code 0x8000ffff. I haven't gotten errors on updates before.
Everything else seems to be working so far, it's just the updates.

Also after the commands Windows told me that the bin on that drive (both C and later D) was corrupted or something and asked if I wanted to clear it.

Ahhh, we are getting somewhere here. My apology for taking so long to reply. I had issues with filtering responses in Outlook and this got sent to the wrong folder. I am glad you are comfortable on the computer. The instructions are long. Please read through
all of them, including the links and dry run through the windows. If you have any questions at all ask before you proceed. You can get yourself into a world of hurt and having to start from scratch very easily.

First I want to make sure this is not a removable drive. If it been the error should have been clearly that, but I want to be sure.

The recycle bin and install errors are definitely owner and access control list issues (as is the error code). I am glad you are comfortable around the computer as I will get fairly technical. Also very importantly, DO NOT follow Steps 3,5 and 5 of @Kthlyn
instructions. I am just clarifying and supporting the MICROSOFT note.

First, as you might need this latter, repairing the recycle bin. I choose the EaseUS link because I stand by their tools. The solution does not require you to use them.

I had your issue when I decided to use a newly setup eSATA drive for my Windows PC games. The steps I gave you got me up and running. I got the additional errors also but thought they were unrelated until now.

We are going to go through the steps of ownership and access. Use the tutorial in this link https://www.howtogeek.com/301768/how-to-take-ownership-of-files-and-folders-in-windows/ as

You are going to change the owner to TrustedInstaller. Right click on the drive and select Properties. Then select the Security tab and click on Advanced. You are going to then click on the blue "Change" at the end of the Owner line, next to the Windows
Security icon. In the box where it says "Enter the object name to select" enter "TrustedInstaller" and click on the Check Names box. It will show up when you do the name check. Select OK. Then ensure your account (and others, and the Guest account) have
the privileges you want. Your should be covered as the default is all Users have full access.

***Make sure to select always select "this and subsequent folders"***

You might have to get into the right cycle of repairing the recycle bin and restarting. I did when I finally got all ownership and permissions set correctly.

So the way Windows 10, Xbox (Beta) App & PC Game Pass handles game installation is an absolute nightmare! It determines where to install games by this setting:

Right click start-->System-->Storage-->Change where new content is saved:
"New apps will save to:"

If you go to the above location, you can choose a drive for future app installations, and the Xbox (Beta) App / PC Game Pass / Microsoft Store will then install to that drive (assuming it lets you change the drive--more on that and error 0x80070005 later).

In doing so, Windows will create folders on the selected drive both immediately and after installing your first game with Xbox (Beta) App:

• The following folders will be inaccessible without forcing permissions in the folder properties advanced security settings:
  WindowsApps, DeliveryOptimization.
• You may also see a folder based on your windows username, and a WpSystem folder which at least can be browsed.
• The games themselves will be installed to a hidden partition that is completely inaccessible as far as I know, which makes modding impossible in most cases.

All of this is awful, and takes all control over game files away from the user, which is probably exactly what Microsoft wants, but is completely useless and invasive to everybody else.

In any case, there may be circumstances where, after selecting another drive, you need to install an app from the Windows Store (or perhaps a game) onto your C drive again. I had to do this just last week in order to install the NVIDIA Control Panel, which
apparently is now a necessary step for the latest driver. That app REQUIRES that it be installed on C and left me no choice but to go back to "New apps will save to:" and set it back to C just for that single installation. Afterwards I tried to set it back
to the other drive I had previously installed games to with the Xbox (Beta) App and BAM, "We couldn't set your default save location." 0x80070005. Even though it had been set up and worked before, Windows would not allow me to choose that drive again after
switching the default install location back to C temporarily.

What followed was an hours long support conversation with a Microsoft rep that did not resolve the issue. No matter what they tried, they couldn't stop the 0x80070005 error. Windows just REFUSED to set the default app folder back to where it was before,
probably because all of the folders are so heavily locked down in the first place!

After much research and trial and error, I found a solution for 0x80070005, but you're not going to like it (and I warn you to
follow these steps at your own risk, I am NOT an expert and take no responsibility for any issues you may encounter or any files you may lose). The only way to resolve that issue that I could find was to completely delete ALL of the above mentioned
folders on the drive that you want to install apps to. Here are the steps that worked for me:

Please note: These steps are meant to help with 0x80070005 when it pops up while trying to change the install location to any drive OTHER than C. If you're getting that error message when trying to set it back to C, I suggest you contact Microsoft or someone
who knows more about Windows than I do. But if you get that error for any other drive, here are the steps I followed:

1: Uninstall ALL installed games with the Xbox (Beta) App (in my case this represented all of the software I had installed to this drive though Microsoft's systems).

2: For WindowsApps & DeliveryOptimization: Folder Properties-->Security-->Advanced-->Change permissions-->Add-->Select a principal-->Type "everyone" into the text box-->Check Names-->OK until all windows are closed

3: Open those now accessible folders and delete all of their contents.

4: Deleted the folders themselves (if you get a permissions error and the folders are empty, check step 2 above again).

5 (optional I think): I also deleted WpSystem and my username folder, but I doubt that was necessary (YOU MAY HAVE PERSONAL FILES HERE LIKE SAVE FILES).

6: Go back to "New apps will save to:" and you should be able to select the drive without error.

7: Reinstall your games with the Xbox (Beta) App.

So there you have it. If you get stuck in this awful situation (and given the NVIDIA Control Panel situation I assume this issue to be commonplace), your best bet is to literally delete all the games previously installed with Xbox (Beta) App / PC Game Pass
/ Microsoft Store and to jump through those hoops to clear out and delete those folders. Only then can you reestablish the install path you want for your games.

MICROSOFT: THIS IS NOT OKAY. Xbox (Beta) App / PC Game Pass users need to be able to choose where to install EACH AND EVERY GAME MANUALLY AND COMPLETELY INDEPENDENTLY FROM THE "New apps will save to:" setting. There should be no hidden folders
or partitions and no folders requiring permissions. I know the Xbox App is still in Beta, but this is completely absurd. At the very least, make sure "New apps will save to:" actually works even if you have to switch back and forth between drives multiple
times. Your system of installing games in insanely complicated compared to every other distribution platform. It also produces a large number of errors when trying to install or update games, and some games don't even launch. You need to do MUCH better than
this.

Run SFC and DISM scans

SFC is a built-in tool that scans and fixes corrupted or incomplete files. Furthermore, it

can give you a wider picture of what caused the problem in first place.

You can use SFC in a few easy steps:

Right-click Start and open the Command Prompt (Admin)

In the command line type following line: sfc/scannow Press Enter to confirm.

If SFC scan didn’t fix your problem, or if you can’t run SFC scan at all, you might want to

try using DISM instead. To use DISM, you just need to follow these simple steps:

Right-click Start and run Command Prompt (Admin).

In the command line, type the following:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Upgrade with the Media Creation Tool

Besides a clean reinstallation of the OS, the Media Creation Tool can be used for updates

as well. While it may be best to do a clean install of Windows 10 to fix your Windows

Store issues for good, the Media Creation tool allows you to preserve your Apps, files

and settings.

This forces a re-install of Windows to the latest version

Updating Windows isn't an option as of right now. Sorry for my bad English, I was trying to say that in my last post.

If I can't find a proper solution, I'm probably going to restore Windows default settings, see if that'll work. Although currently everything else seems to be working so I'm not going to think about it right now.
