Installations and Updates to external HDD fail in Stand-By

Installations (/downloading games) and updates to games (maybe also apps) to external HDDs fail during Stand-By.

The result is the "installation stopped" message.

I tried this with different games and using different external HDDs.

Downloading the same games to the internal drive works and the HDDs work while the xbox is on.

I have instant-on turned on and tried it with the option for powering down the external storage with the xbox turned on and off and it made no difference.

External drive models I used for testing:

Intenso Memory Box 3TB

Western Digital MyBook 3TB

First I was using the Intenso drive and thought the problem was somehow connected to the non-configurable sleep time and relatively long wake-up times but then I used the Western Digital drive and set the (on this one configurable) sleep time to never but
the results were the same.

As a workarround I set the internal drive as standard installation target and moved content to the external hdd afterwards and downloading new content works that way but updates for the games on the external dirve still fail since they are loaded to the external
HDD.

Any suggestions on how to fix this or has anyone else this problem?

Please recommend a good 3.0 USB hard drive

I personally use, and recommend an USB 3.0 Seagate 2TB Expansion HDD for Xbox One, as external drive is powered by mains plug pack.

Laptop External HDDs powered by USB port, are thinner; but, are also slower than Desktop HDDs used in mains powered external drives.

People recommend Western Digital (WD) external HDDs: But, they tend to use Green drives that don't perform well, and tend to fail sooner etc.

 

External Hard Drive or 1TB Hard Drive

External HDD is the right choice imho. If you connect an external usb3 HDD installations and games are a slightly faster and you'll have more space to use

 

For anyone else facing similar problems:

I think i solved it by unchecking the option for powering down the drive with the xbox.

I did so before but had the suspicion that it was not applied since the external drive still seemed to go to sleep after powering off the xbox so this time I unchecked this option and then did "cold-boot" my xbox by holding the power button for a while.
Since i did that (not sure if this really did the trick or it´s just coincidence) my drive will not go to to sleep when powering off the xbox as configured.

Now it seems to work.

I still think this is something some technician at MS may want to look after because I would assume that even with the option enabled background downloading should work by design (powering off the external drive when the xbox is in stand-by in general but
powering it up when it is needed).

I would like it to work that way from a consumer perspective and also think that this is what is intended because when I had the option check the drive woke up while the xbox was in stand-by and downloads were queued but showed a strange behaviour:

The drive started to spin and stopped again.

This happened in a loop and the download was not processed ending up with the "installation stopped" mesage so I think something does not work as intended in this scenario.

 

i'm having the same problem, external hdd goes to sleep and installation stopped message appears. this even though i have the dont turn off the hdd unchecked. i hope they sort this out, it's very annoying.

 

As I wrote before unchecking the option to turn off the HDD with the xbox seemed not to take effect for me so I did power cycle my xbox like this:

support.xbox.com/.../power-cycle-console

And since I did that the option took effect and my HDD did not go to sleep anymore.
