    Improving the Xbox App Update System on Windows for Capped Internet Markets


    Dear Xbox / Microsoft Team,

    I am writing to you as a passionate gamer and a representative of a vast gaming community in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

    In our region, the vast majority of internet users are bound by limited internet quotas (capped data plans). Because of this, the current game update system on the Xbox App for Windows poses a major challenge. The Xbox app frequently requires downloading massive file sizes or re-downloading entire files for an update, rather than just downloading the modified data.

    This issue significantly negatively impacts user willingness to purchase games from the Xbox Store or maintain active subscriptions. Instead, most gamers migrate to competing platforms like Steam for one crucial reason:

    Steam utilizes an efficient differential patching system that modifies existing files, keeping download sizes incredibly small.

    An update that might require 40 GB on the Xbox app often only takes a few megabytes or a couple of gigabytes on Steam.

    Upgrading the Xbox app update delivery system to support smaller, file-modifying patches would not only support gamers in data-capped regions but would also massively boost Xbox Store sales and Game Pass adoption in the Arab world by making it a viable alternative to other launchers.

    I truly hope this feedback reaches the engineering and user experience teams. We love the Xbox ecosystem and want to see it thrive globally.

    I can't afford these 2GB updates! Is there a way to play Live without updating One?

    The system updates are needed to continually improve the experience for everyone. The amount of improvements the system updates have provided are staggering and are making the system better than ever. Please look at

    support.xbox.com/.../system-update-operating-system     and tell me these are not useful in any way.

    I highly recommend you to look into the available ISP's in your area to see if there is any better options so that you can enjoy your console to the fullest. You cannot expect to be able to play fully online games with a data cap that, even when using mobile
    apps, is nearly laughably small.

    I have some movies saved on a SD card in WMV format. When I try to play it in my Xbox 360 the code 80COODF242 pops up and it says it is an unsupported codec. What is the problem?

    The required codecs are not included in the latest update, they stopped improving media features on the Xbox 360 7 or eight years ago.As app development on the 360 is all the dead, it is highly unlikely that a third-party program would be introduced that would contain them like VLC. I used to love windows media center on Windows 7 and Xbox 360, and use my system extensively

    Since they have no Internet connection, they’re not going to be able to download the update even if it would help

    Many video converters like Handbrake have an Xbox 360 preset. It’s free.

    Make sure to update your Windows, Device Drivers, Xbox and gaming services app:

    Windows:

    Press the Start button on the taskbar, type settings, and then select Settings.

    On Windows 10, select Update & Security. On Windows 11, select Windows Update.

    On the Windows Update page, select Check for updates to see if any updates are available for your device.

    Once the updates have downloaded, select Install now to start the installation.

    Following installation, we recommend that you restart your device so that the latest updates can take effect.

    Device Drivers:

    For the best game performance, make sure your system’s video card drivers (or display adapter drivers) are up to date. Drivers are available on the support website for your computer manufacturer, or if your computer system is custom built, on the video card manufacturer’s support website. Updating video card drivers can resolve game crashes, improve frame rates, and improve overall game performance.

    Xbox and gaming services:

    Press the Start button on the taskbar, type store, and open the Microsoft Store app.

    Select Library.

    Under Updates & downloads, check if there are any updates available for the Xbox app or Gaming Services app. If an update is available, select Update.

    Then sign out and re-sign in your account to see if it works.
