I’m wondering if I can get an gamertag that is taken

There's no way to request a gamertag. The only way to get it (without getting a suffix added) would be for the original owner to change the tag to something else, or if they do not sign into their Xbox account for 5 years, it will be freed up by the system. If they don't sign into their Microsoft account within 2 years, that will close the account and should also free up the tag. There's no way to know for sure how inactive an account is.

With this, please know that most subscriptions are non-refundable, which is why it's best to turn off recurring billing to help prevent instances like this. When you cancel your subscription at account.microsoft.com/services, you'll get an option for a refund if you're eligible.

Basically, I was told by an agent to make a forum post because they will keep me updated here. My issue is that 2 years ago after I changed my gamertag, that gamertag was immediately taken by someone and never used on a silver account. I was wondering if
microsoft can release the gamertag to me.

Thank you for your response. I’m aware that there is nothing I can currently do, but I was wondering if Xbox would consider allowing players like me to make a small one character change to their gamertags.
