I'm Tired of Constant Updates

The world is not all high speed broadband and roses. We tend to take high speed unlimited internet connections for granted these days and developers are some of the worst in that camp. I myself work in IT, but I have a secret my home internet is practically
unusable. I am not stuck in this situation out of carelessness, laziness, or some other easily fixed situation; it's quite to the contrary, I have fought and fought to try and get a decent internet connection but no one wants to provide one. I admit that I
don't live in a downtown neighborhood but I'm certainly not miles out in the middle of nowhere. For crying out loud, I'm only an hour drive from Silicon Valley.

Currently I am using a company supplied Verizon cellular home router, but that only gives me 15GB of use before I am throttled down into non-usable connection speeds (Verizon call it what it is, it's throttling, not "prioritization" or whatever helps you
sleep at night).

I thought that I might have had an AT&T connection a few years ago, I fought hard and finally got through the BS and they said that yes I was in range. Then sadly, 24 hours before the connection was to go live, I received an email stating that they were
cancelling the connection in light of new information. I called the 1-800 number immediately, waited on hold for over 20 minutes before someone picked up. I kid you not, 45 seconds into the conversation, "CLICK, We're sorry but you have called outside of our
service hours..." I called back the next day and was told that a technician had made the determination that we were outside of optimal range, I said can we at least try as I already had the hardware and they said no. I have tried local ISP's and there are
site issues that have led all of them to say, "Sorry but no." Recently Charter communications started a heavy mailing campaign in our area (again), as always I called to sign up. They were able to put us on basic cable, but that was the extent of it as the
lines in the area were too old to support digital.

I say all this to give a backstory of someone desperate for a decent internet connection. My career has been hampered by my lack of a connection, simple day to day things I can't do. Earlier I mentioned my 15GB connection in today's digital world you know
how long that lasts; being as careful as I could be, doing my best job ever to be cautious on usage had it last a little over a day. In today's internet age our devices are constantly talking, iPhones are backing up to iCloud, game consoles are in a constant
run of updates, computers backing up data, downloading programs, and keeping their security software up to date. Metered connections ARE A JOKE! My wife got me a game for my birthday, it took over a month of downloading before I was able to
play it, not online but simply the campaign mode (I still haven't been able to play online, another update was required for that).

Bringing this long message home, Microsoft makes a great console the content available for it is outstanding, however there are far too many updates and they are all too big. My wife is a Playstation gamer and when we discuss consoles I can never
win because she points out the update size and volume discrepancy. Regarding unmetered broadband connections, I am a strong conservative however this is one area that the government needs to mandate change; for the well being of the people broadband needs
to be regulated like power or phone access. I know Microsoft could easily champion this and help pave the way for change in this arena if they so chose.

I left this message as a discussion instead of a support ticket intentionally, this is something that people need to read and be aware of. Large parts of the country are totally unserviced or underserviced when it comes to internet access. This effectively
chokes all STEM outreach in those areas, when I was growing up the internet was in it's infancy but I remember the value even that old AOL connection had in helping me learn and start down a path in tech. With today's internet designs being so media rich and
high resolution a slow 768mbps connection barely works. We NEED a better system.

On this console I'm not on the insider program. Got sick and tired on other console constant updates. Tried power cycling. Only seems to fix it some of the time. Same as normal restart. Its probably only since the last update.

 

With the push to 4K gaming I'm afraid that you are going to see patch sizes going up rather than down. Even if you try and avoid that, publishers now have a release early and finish it later attitude which means larger day one patches.

All you can really do is keep your console offline for single player games and only update if you feel you really need to.

 

Nothing you can do about it I'm afraid, both Microsoft and Sony push huge updates for both their consoles and games.

If your strictly limited to 15GB a month perhaps look at the Switch, its not as powerful as either the Xbox One or PS4, but the updates it does get a much smaller.
