So what your saying is, when you set up your account you got an automatic name? If yes you should be able to change your GT back to RuthlessPolak69 for free.

 

gamertag XXX is no longer allowed

I ended up downloading my old profiles, but it wants me to pay 800 points to change that name. According to xbox policies I should be able to change my xbox gamertag once free of charge - "If you created your gamertag when you signed up for Xbox LIVE, you

Is there something preventing this name change for free, and will the old gamertag definitely be free'd up once I change it so I can change my current name "FUBAR PhD" to tptass?

 

That used to be the policy until too many people abused it.

 

Microsoft used to allow people to change their name for free when it was force changed but too many people would abuse that gesture and make a gamertag just as against the terms of service as their previous gamertag or worse.

So because of that Microsoft eventually decided to start charging to change your gamertag again after it was force changed due to the amount of people abusing the previous way of doing things. Players would be less likely to change their gamertag to something
against the rules if their was a price to pay for doing so.

That being said you can blame the players over the years who abused being allowed to change their Gamertag for free when force changed for that new policy.
