If I own the disc, do I still have to buy the game?

I'm trying to play a physical copy of an Xbox 360 game on my Xbox series X. I learned that it's not on the back compat list, so I know it's not something I can play via my disc. It is, however, in the Xbox store.

So, if I already own the physical copy, is there a way to get the game from the store without buying it a second time?

If it's not backwards compatible, then it won't be possible to play it on a Series X with a disc or with a digital copy.

Because you are not installing a game you own. You said so yourself your disc is cracked. What you are suggesting is illegal as you do not own that copy of the game. Why not just take the game back to Best Buy and see if they will replace it? If
it is still within the stores return/exhange period it would be covered. Or contact the GAME DEVELOPER and see if they have a disc replacement program.

Yes, this is straightforward, my question is: after you have done the download as you mentioned, and you later want to play the game without having to put your physical disc in the xbox, and you BUY the digital version, do you still have to do ANOTHER
download to play the game from a digital file without using your disc. I know that even upif you own the game, you must buy it again to play it digitally, but my question is: do you have to do the download all over again? Thanks!
