Is it possible that your friends signed up for the Minecraft Beta in the Insider App?

If that's the case, your friends either need to leave the Minecraft Beta and play on the "regular" version, or you'll have to install the Xbox Insider App, and join the Minecraft Beta as well.

As Ackis already said: since this is an old thread, please create your own new thread.

In the mean time, ask the friend you're trying to connect to, if they joined the Minecraft Beta Insider program. if they are using a beta version that is newer than your regular version, you'll get that error.

Either ask your friend to leave the Insider Program for Minecraft, or join the Minecraft beta program yourself by downloading the Xbox Insider App from the Marketplace.

As stated by Xbox Forums Ambassador HackingSpartan8, in order to

leave the Minecraft Beta you will need to have the Xbox Insider Hub installed on your console to unenroll.

Keep in mind that you will not have access to any worlds you created in the Beta until you update to that version of Minecraft once more.

When you delist the game from its beta client back to the current version that is publicly avaliable, you will lose access to any world that was in the beta version until the update that was in the beta version comes out to the regular base game.

It is very confusing I know. To make a long explanation short, you can go back to the game outside of beta but the worlds saved or created in the beta will be locked until the game gets an official update. You'd get an "outdated" error or something similar
to that. Unless you are trying to play with someone who doesn't want to mess with the beta it isn't really advised to leave it because you may have to temporarily start a new world.

In the meantime we can try something different, this is download the Minecraft preview app. Once downloaded import the “old worlds” using the button for that purpose

Once imported try using your existing worlds or create new worlds
