I'm considering buying the digital download copy of Destiny in order to get the free upgrade to xbox one version later. We have already rented the game on disc though, and installed it to the hard drive. If I buy the digital copy, will it use the data
already copied from disc, or will it download the entire game anyway?

Ideally, I'd rather not download it if I don't have to, to avoid going over bandwidth caps with my ISP. . .

What happens if..

I have the disc version of a game then later on want to download the digital version? Will it just download an unlock code so the disc info that was already installed can be used as the digital game? Or would it install the whole thing again?

Did you buy the digital version of the game or the disc?

If you have the digital version, yes, make sure you are logged into your Xbox with the same account that you purchased it with. You should see the game in your "Ready to Install" section of your Xbox, download the game from there.

For disc version, it should download as soon as you put the disc in, keep in mind that to play the disc version, the disc will have to be in the tray to play.

yes, you would have to download it anyway, when installed by disc Version its still required to check if disc is present - at minimun this check is removed in download Version

If you borrowed your friends game on disc, installed it, then decided you also wanted this game, you just buy it from the Xbox Store. As you've already installed the game from disc you won't need to download anything, other than any updates as normal.

The Xbox 360 had separate digital and disc based games, the Xbox One does not.

No, otherwise people would buy the disc, download the digital version and sell the disc again. Then the new disc owner installs the digital version, sells the disc to someone else and so on and so on.

That way thousands of people could then own the game, but the game maker only got money for the first initial purchase.

What do you mean by the Xbox One does not have any digital version of games? Everything stored on the Xbox One is digital. On the non-disc based games the license is stored on the HDD while on the disc based games the license is stored on the disc.

On Xbox One, the entire game must be installed to the system from the Blu-ray game disc. Once it is installed, the disc is only accessed to verify ownership.

On Xbox One, both the digital downloads and the discs are exactly the same size. It's actually a rather neat feature of the system. If a friend installs their game from disc on your system, then when they go, you buy the digital version, there's no download
as the game already installed is simply unlocked to run without the disc verification. Very useful if your Internet connection isn't too snappy.
