I wanted to try to change my gamer tag and it keep saying that it wasn’t allowed. Why is this?

Probably the system thinks that something on it has something offensive. In those cases the only option is use a different gamertag or change a letter for a number, etc. (Due to is automated)

if the Gamertag reports as not allowed. This is probably because the names are inappropriate (profane, etc.), they were previously used inappropriately with a banned account (spam, cheating), and they were hacked and closed for security.

I'm afraid there is no way around this.

believe it or not it maybe down to that shiesty word as it does mean deceitful and untrustworthy which may not be liked in some countries, as it is a global platform they have to cater for everyone in that area.

the free gamer tag change was only allowed when your gamer tag change was forced. People abused this by reporting gamer tags that people wanted to change so once a force change was made they then changed it again to what they wanted for free. Because
of that abuse of the system all game tag changes now cost even if a force change has happened.

And you are wrong with the quote that only a certain type of gamer tags are allowed to be changed free. Go to your xbox profile page and try to edit your gamer tag. You will see a prompt that says you are allowed to change it free only once. There is absolutely
no other criteria specified there. For as long as I haven't made any change to what was given to me, I still qualify for a free change.
