There are a TON of these posts on here about this issue. Here's mine.

My brother recently passed away and I received his Xbox One among his things. I noticed about a month ago that nearly every time I turn it on there is ~400 MB update. Then got a couple of 4GB I think, including today. I turn the Xbox on a couple to few times a week and I thought this was pretty excessive.

Long story short, after some research tonight Insider seems to be the likely culprit. Cool. How do I opt out? That's when the Google and Reddit blackhole of posts began. Unfortunately, I deleted my brothers account less than a week ago (when the console popped up with 'Goodbye, {borther's name}. We'll miss you.' or whatever it says I cried for 20 minutes). I signed in with my own account, which I've had since like early Xbox 360 days, and the updates continue.

I read the solution is to download the Xbox Insider app and when you open it, on the landing page go to settings blah blah blah.......

But, finally, here's my question. The Xbox Insider app opens and my only option is to Join. Does that mean I'm not in the Insider program or is it because I signed into my own account and took management of the device?

Do I need to 'Join' and register this device in order to un-register it? That seems risky to me.

Sounds like you are a member of the preview/insider program. If you opt out of that program you will get a lot fewer updates.

Are you currently in the Insider/Preview program, or have recently opted out of it?

If so, the Xbox is subject to factory resetting itself to new preview updates (if you're still in the program), or the latest public OS release (if you've opted out).

If you're in the insider's program you accept the risks that come with it unfortunately. There may not be much you can do.

I actually opted out of the insider program updates last year, so the update that caused this issue was a normal update. I am still an Insider, but I do not receive the insider updates on my Xbox One.

The thing is that after you opt out, your console remains in the insider program until the next official update.

So you might still have the issues from the insider preview program.
