    When it shows you what the code is for, it will then ask you to confirm it or not, just select no, that way you can still give the code to the person you purchased it for.

    The easy way is to try to redeem it on the store, if it doesn't work, then it will tell you.

    As the user above said I would try to redeem the code and if it is active or not it will tell you. If it is not active you can try to take it back to the store where you purchased it and see if you can get it exchanged.
