I need to change my phone number on my xbox account

And you can change your number here also.

If you are not able to log in and it is 2FA then you would have to go through the 'I do not have this option' prompts until you can change your security information and wait 30 days.

My best friend gave me his old xbox 1 way back in 2020, I just took over his old acount, he used that xbox from 2014-2018. I went on to spend the next 4 years now buying things and playing on this account, super unexpectedly my buddies dad who set up his account dies and his family disconected his phone number and they got rid of his old email which were the ones that initially created the account. My xbox is asking me to verify the account via either text code or email, which I can not do, the other option I have is to answer a few questions from when the account was set up, neither my best bud or I know any of the answers to the questions. I've been dealing with this issue for the past month and a half, attempted to contact microsoft for help numorous times with no assistance. Im losing hope and dont know what to do.

First and foremost its actually against the rules for your friend to let you use his account. Its also against the rules for you to be using the account (even with his permission)

For example, don’t:

• Share your profile with someone else
  
• Use someone else’s credit cards without their permission
  
• Share information about another player more broadly than they’ve agreed to
  
• Post private information about another player (engage in doxing)
  
• Use someone else’s profile to buy things for yourself
  

Because of the above im not sure how much (if any) help you'd receive with this. That being said the form is the only way to recover the account in these types of situations. If your friend cannot remember enough details about the account to recover it using the form then unfortunately it would be unrecoverable. The form also won't work if two step verification was enabled on the account.
