Unfortunately, if the account has been compromised, it won't be possible to recover it as the hacker has changed the email.

The avatar will always be visible; this is a design decision.

To my knowledge, there is no way to make just your avatar private. You can go into privacy setting and set your profile so that only friends can view it.
