I need help logging into my main Xbox account

Based on your description, it is not possible to have 2 Xbox accounts linked to one email address. A Microsoft Xbox account can only be associated with 1 primary email address/alias. Your first Xbox account must have been associated with a different email address from the one you had with your second Xbox account.

As far as I am aware nothing has changed. You would to have your sons device as the Home xbox and him the main user with your account as additional. Your device would need to be secondary xbox with your account being the main and your son as additional account.
You don't need to be logged into his xbox and he doesn't need to be logged into yours.
