    I have my Xbox set to 1080p and 120hz but if I enable the allow 4K setting, will it go back...


    So I have a 4K TV that is only capable of being 60hz on 4K and can go up to 120hz but only at 1080p. I have my settings set to 1080p resolution and 120hz refresh rate for games that support 120 FPS modes. If I go to TV settings there is a setting called “Allow 4K” which says “This setting allows native 4K content for 4K games and apps, even if your console is set to a lower resolution.”

    What I’m wondering is, does it actually recognize when a game is native 4K or checkerboard 4K or any type of 4K for that matter and automatically switches my settings back to 4K and 60hz? Or does it just upscale to 4K from the 1080p setting I have it set to? On PS5 there’s an option to have an automatic 120hz mode enabled for games that support it. So I don’t have to switch back and forth between 60hz and 120hz. On Xbox that doesn’t seem to be the case unless “Allow 4K” is a way of doing that.

    It's either a 4K panel or a 1080p panel and it's either 60Hz or 120Hz, but you're correct that it seems to contradict itself. I wonder if it could be a television setting? I know on my TV, I have to enable the external input setting to enable 4K120. I
    presume you're using the HDMI that cable came w/ your Xbox?

    Thank-you but that's not quite the question - see my resolved ticket.

    This thread is about 1440/1080p 120hz TVs not being properly supported. There is a workaround to allow 4k - either turn of HDR or uncheck the tickbox "allow 4k" and make sure your settings are set to 1440/1080p 120 before starting a game.

    It'd be good if Microsoft could look at this again as it clearly affects anyone without a new TV that supports 120hz at resolutions under 4k.

    Do I need to change the Xbox SX settings from 4K UHD/120hz, to 1080p/120hz, and turn off instant game response (VRR) for the Sea Of Thieves 1080p/120hz update?

    Not sure I can be bothered every time I load the game up!

    Also am I meant to be turning off instant game response (VRR) and setting the Xbox to run at 60 Hz for Apps/Bluray as well?

    Could I just leave the Xbox settings as 4K UHD/120hz with VRR (Instant Game Response) enabled on the CX for everything?

    No idea really about any of this stuff! I'm just a console gamer trying to get by! If I wanted to fiddle about with settings every time I did anything I would have got a pc!

    Any advice is most welcome thank you in advance!

    It depends on what resolution your going to play at and the resolution of the tv,

    if 4K, you need HDMI 2.1 to get 4K at 120hz refresh rate,

    HDMI 2.0 will only allow 4K at 60hz.

    if your at 1080p/1440p, HDMI 2.0 will be ok for 120hz refresh rate, however if it is 1080p/1440p i would recommend getting the Xbox Series S as that is aimed at 1080p/1440p.
