I have minecraft java and bedrock but when i go to java it says BUY NOW instead of play

Did you buy the version for Java and Bedrock recently?

Try checking this link to see if you have an option to download it:

If owned, you should be able to see "Already owned Minecraft? Download it again"

If you do not have that option, try reinstalling the Minecraft launcher.

And do the Xbox app and MS store reset:

Click Start and click Settings; Select Apps & features. Find the Xbox app and click Advanced options. Click Reset then also click repair.

Once done, please do this:

Click Start and search for wsreset, right click then open as admin, wait for the store to load up again.

Once done, restart your PC then try again please.

I purchased bedrock on the windows MC launcher by itself. Now when I go in the launcher it shows that bedrock is ready to play while java says "Buy Now".

Same thing happend to me but i bought the Minecraft java and bedrock sold together but it still says i need to buy Minecraft Java Edition

The Xbox edition of Minecraft in the screenshot is still the Bedrock edition, is it not? I should have access to Java through owning the Bedrock edition, and I don't understand why I wouldn't be able to play it if I played Java in the past with my Microsoft account without having to buy Java.

Yes, if you once had a Minecraft for Android, you would have the no Buy Now in Minecraft website, that means you have played the Android/iOS version of the game. If you have purchase Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition (this is package for Windows OS), both Java and Bedrock should show no Buy Now option.

For your concern, there is no free Minecraft Java edition for Android version of Minecraft Bedrock, reason is that Java is only for PC version not mobile. The offer is for the ones with Minecraft Bedrock or Minecraft for Windows license to have a free Minecraft Java edition.
