i have lost SO MUCH progress in games thanks to the zero warning system update

I do tend to use my Xbox one a lot, but as of the past few months its been.... a bit "wonky" my Xbox one S has the Microsoft store update problem, its where over time the Microsoft stores updates get more and more frequent until it reaches a point that it doesn't actually finish the updates at all, then the only solution that resets it is a factory reset, that ive done 3 times now

but right now I tend to use my Xbox for a few days, turn it off, switch my TV to my Switch or HBO max, and play/watch some shows, meanwhile my Xbox is supposed to update while im NOT using it but never does, it usually waits until the peak of activity on it to say "update time, screw whatever your doing" and when I DO remember console updates exist, they're usually either not here yet or dont show up at all in the "check for updates" area

personally, I think my Xbox is just on its last legs, I dont have the money to even replace it with the exact same system, let alone series S or X, so im hoping it can limp till march or April of 2022, I have to replace my phone in January then by March or April hopefully the series X will be in stock somewhere that its total wont go above $500 (without tax), and then ill get a series X, if its not in stock ill be stuck with a series S or one S

I am sorry to hear that you are having troubles. System updates are rolled out to customers over a week-long period. Where they are usually made available on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and customers have a week to get them downloaded and installed.

To manually check if an update is available for your console, go here:

Settings - System - Update and it will show if a console update is pending for your console

Also, on this same screen. There are two options

Keep my console up to date - if checked, the Xbox services will try to update your console when you are not using it

Keep my games & apps up to date - will also try to download any Content Updates for games you have recently played

If you are using the console during the daily update window, then it will try again the next day. It does this every day between the first available date for a system update up to when that system update becomes mandatory. If you choose to not check the Keep my console up to date checkbox, then you may want to manually check for updates as a first step after turning on your console

actually im not part of the insider updates anymore, i left that several years ago, and it was the original reason that caused me to leave it, but still screws me over to this day, the updates are rare now, but that just makes it more devastating because you have absolutely no clue when it will hit

I take it you are part of the Insiders program? As it sounds like these updates are very frequent which is usual for IP. Unfortunately, you agree to instant update when you sign up for Insiders. Agreed a 5 minute warning or whatever would be useful...a schedule may be more difficult as things change at the last minute and then people would be complaining the update didn't happen when it's scheduled.

Assuming you are part of Insiders, only option would be to opt-out

Public updates are usually only once a month. Usually near the end of the month. So it's always a good idea to check manually for updates. That way, you won't get caught out when playing a game.
