if it's a monitor so old it doesn't have HDMI, it's not going to be able to carry Sound

You'll need to look on the monitor for a headphone jack, but otherwise you're gonna need to use an audio receiver or a pair of headphones plugged into the controller, or an official wireless set

I suggest you buy or use a TV because the TV is always include speakers and proper HDMI

If it's not got HDMI then what does it have?

I belive only a display port can provide sound via an adaptor, if it's DVI or VGA you're out of luck and you need a different adapter to split the sound.

Sorry, I don't have a suggestion. I'm trying to visualize your config. Are you using your receiver as a switch for most devices, going from the receiver HDMI out to Xbox HDMI in, and then Xbox One HDMI out to the TV/monitor?

you can plug any hdmi device into the input HDMI on Xbox, i used to use my ps4 then my pc on it as back then my monitor only had 1 hdmi. i have even added a HDMI switch to the input on the Xbox and had multiple devices connected, just means using more electric though as it is not a passive passthrough and the xbox must be powered on.

Yeah, I thought about all the disadvantages as well. I bought an adaptor to fit over the HDMI to plug it into my monitors DVI slot and it worked great. I have my Xbox plugged into the HDMI slot for the sound since DVI doesn't carry audio. I plugged in my laptop's HDMI cable, using the adaptor, into the DVI slot since I can use the speakers on the laptop for my sound when using the PC to watch movies and such. My monitor has small speakers, so I already had external speakers attached to that. It all works for now, thanks for your response and have a great weekend and be safe, wink.
