Hi Sarah. My name is Kyle and I'm an independent advisor.

Unfortunately, you can't transfer Xbox profiles between Microsoft account's. Your son's Xbox profile is permanently tied to your account and can't be changed to a child account.

If you create a new Microsoft account, you'll also have to create a new Xbox profile, and his progress and purchases in games won't transfer over. This is why it's recommended to set up individual account's for children instead of letting them using your own account.

Unfortunately, the gamertag was set up under my Microsoft account. I originally set up a child Microsoft account for him, but didn't realize that the gamertag he has been using has been linked to mine... and I never set up xbox under his child account;(

He would either need to continue using what he has now, but there's no way to turn it into a child account. Or create a brand new account for him so you can use the parental control features, but he will have to start over on the new account.

So he has a microsoft account now, and is set up as my child in our family group. But you are saying there is no way to put that (my) gamertag on his account? Would he be able to use the same gamertag name if I delete that gamertag from my profile?

So just to be clear, the only way for me to be able to use parental controls over him is for him to start over fresh setting up new gamertag?

If the Microsoft account he is using now is a child account and set up in your family as a child, then you should be able to use parental controls on it without having to set up a new account. But nothing can be transferred between accounts so anything he has done through your Microsoft account cannot be transferred to his.
