I changed my gamertag and the old one is still showing up inconsistently. Microsoft support...

So years ago I got sick of my dumb pirate themed gamertag so I paid $9 to change it to a normal name because I have no imagination. I went to my Xbox profile on Xbox.com, clicked "customize", and then clicked on the pencil next to my name that says "change gamertag". Let's say it's now "Nathan#34789". The hashtag and numbers were added by Xbox. I can still see the receipt for that on my account purchases, it was in March 2021.

Until recently the only Microsoft game I played was Sea of Thieves, which is why it's taken me so long to inquire about this. I noticed that in Sea of Thieves my gamertag had never changed, even well past the 48 hours they say you should wait. I figured it was a Sea of Thieves problem and it was a pirate name so whatever. Well, recently I downloaded Minecraft to play with some friends and it still shows the old gamertag there too. When I log into the Xbox website or the Sea of Thieves website on Chrome and then go to my profile it also still says the old gamertag as my profile name. That is unless I click on my Xbox profile, go to "customize" and the click "change gamertag" again. When the new window pops up it says the my gamertag is Nathan#34789 and it wont let me change it to Nathan again because I already own it. Interestingly, if I log into the Xbox app on my PC it says Nathan#34789 as my name in the top left corner. However, if I click on it, and then click "view profile", on my profile in the Xbox app it says "Nathan#34789" next to my profile pic, but then below it my old gamertag is still there in smaller letters.

I called Microsoft support today and told them about the problem. At first they couldn't find a gamertag associated with my Microsoft account even though we double checked that my email was right. Then another guy came on and told me that I didn't actually change my gamertag years ago, I only customized it which is why two still show up. had no idea that there was a difference between customizing and changing your gamertag. He said to get rid of the old one permanently I have to pay $10 more. Even though the receipt on my account says "Gamertag Change" and when I go on my profile it literally says "change gamertag" and then "choose your new gamertag". And then when I try and change it to Nathan again it says "You already own that gamertag, if you’re happy with it you don’t need to make any changes", and it literally wont let be click "check availability." If that's not how I'm supposed to change my gamertag then how am I? I mean sure, I clicked "customize" to get there but everything I've found online brings me to the same page. If I did it right the first time then I feel like it's ridiculous to ask me to pay 10$ more.
