Let's check the transaction first. Please sign in to https://account.microsoft.com/billing/orders then check if you can see the Gamertag transaction from there.

Once confirmed, go to https://account.xbox.com/profile to check if it was changed from there, but if not, kindly try changing it again, this time you shouldn't be charged again.

Happened with me a while ago,

Try restart your Xbox and if it still hasn’t changed, I clicked on the change gamertag option and typed my new name in and it swapped it immediately without asking for another payment.

I’m guessing that it bought the gamertag change but now wants you to type the same name in to actually use it.

So its been roughly a week or more. It hasn’t changed I just tried doing what you said but it still unfortunately hasn’t changed. What should I do now?

Depending on what server you are playing it could take up to a week !
