If I may ask, what device are you using in playing Minecraft? Are you on Xbox? Because if yes and all of your settings are setup correctly this can be related to your Xbox Live Gold subscription.

An Xbox Live Gold subscription is required to play an online multiplayer game such as Minecraft. You can check your subscription here:

Hey, my lad had the same issue even though i've not restricted it, and when I checked the accounts on the computer it said he could join clubs etc, and I set it to exactly what mine was and he still couldn't join a club. Turns out, even though it was set
fine on the computer, when I checked on the actual Xbox it was restricted for some reason. So, check on the actual Xbox all the settings mate

I had the same issue. I want to restrict my child's play to just with "friends" along with all other viewable content but when I select "child" or "teen" or even try to customize the security, he cannot join friends' games even though the settings are set
to join "friends" only. The adult selection seems to be the only one that will connect. Any resolution to allow for restrictions only for friends to see information?

“Join Multiplayer Games” Settings
If you have your settings set to block joining multiplayer games, you can’t join any multiplayer games in Minecraft, including shared local worlds, Realms or servers. To enable multiplayer in Minecraft, make sure this setting is set to ‘Allow.’

However, just like ASCllnaut, that setting was already turned on for my children. In other words I'm in the same boat, we can play on the LAN but not on a realm.

I’m having the same issue where I can’t leave. I can’t change my Xbox settings or even access the page on search browsers because it says I’m in a family group yet I didn’t join one and no-one is added to mine. My age on my account is correctly 21, but it still forces the family group restrictions with no way to stop them. I can’t even look at my Xbox profile anymore!
