I can't join a friend who is on Xbox in Sea of Thieves

Cross-network play on Windows devices and Xbox consoles

Some multiplayer games offer cross-network play (or cross play), which enables gamers on Windows 10/11 devices and Xbox consoles to play with gamers on PCs, Nintendo consoles, Playstation consoles, and more. Cross-network play is enabled by default. To see whether a game supports cross-network play, check the game details at the Microsoft Store.

If you’re having trouble with cross-network play:

• Make sure your game supports cross-network play. Refer to online game details.
  
• Make sure you’re signed in to the Xbox network and the Xbox status is up and running.
  
• Make sure your Xbox friends are online and connected to the Xbox network. (Friends with other consoles should be connected to their network.)
  
• Make sure other online devices on your network aren’t interfering with your game.

How do multiplayer games and communication work for cross-network play?

1. Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide, and then go to Profile & system > Settings > Account.
   
2. Select Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details and customize > Communication & multiplayer.
   
   Note For a family member, from Account, select Family settings > Manage family members. Choose a family member, and then follow step 2 above.
   
3. Choose settings for the following options:
   
   • You can join multiplayer games. This allows you to play multiplayer games. Note that it doesn’t enable communication. Choose Allow or Block.
     
   • You can join cross-network play. This allows or prohibits all cross-network play. Choose Allow or Block.
     
   • Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites. This option allows or prohibits another player from communicating with you. Select Everybody, Friends, or Block (an individual player).
     
   • You can communicate outside of the Xbox network with voice & text. When you allow cross-network play, you control who can communicate with you. Choose Everybody, In-game friends, or Block.
     
   • You can use video for communications. Allows you to choose who can communicate with you using video. Choose from Everybody, Friends, or Block (an individual player).
     
   • Others can see your activity feed. Allows you to decide who can see what you post to your activity feed. Choose from Everybody, Friends, or Block (an individual player).

I don't use the cloud for any other games other than sea of thieves, as far as I can tell it's only been with sea of thieves. I normally join them instead of inviting my friend.
