However none of the account details, including birth date and age, should affect any game progress or delete anything. So changing your child’s birth date on their account shouldn’t change anything.

If you updated your date of birth on your MS account via account.microsoft.com that does not change the date of birth on your xbox account. The date of birth listed on your xbox account on account creation is permanent. So if the age is under 18 it will
remain a child account until the age is 18.

Is your child account 18 years old based on the date of birth you originally entered when making the account? If not then that is why it wont change to an adult account. Note that if you changed the date of birth on your Microsoft account that will not change
the date of birth on you Xbox Account. The child-adult upgrade system only looks at the date of birth that was originally entered when your Xbox account was made.

Changing the date of birth on the Microsoft account wont affect the Xbox profile at all. It will always remember the original date of birth entered in at account creation.

You will need to promote his child account to an adult account.

After you reach the age of adulthood (which varies by country and region), you can promote a child account to an adult account. This promotion removes the Family Settings and Xbox Live restrictions.

To promote a child account to an adult account

• Go to Settings and then select Account.
• Select Promote Child Account.
  Note This option is available only if the date of birth for the account indicates that you have reached the age of adulthood (18 in the United Kingdom). The legal adult age varies by country and region. The age of an account owner is calculated
  by using the date of birth provided when the account was created. This date cannot be changed. If you entered an incorrect date of birth when you created the account, your only option is to create a new account using the correct date of birth.
