    Which Game Pass do you have? Game Pass Core or Ultimate (which include Core) will allow you to play online. Regular Game Pass for console will not.

    No he is trying to play online but it wont let him and prompts him to buy gamepass, but he can download and play gamepass games offline

    Live is the service you need to pay to play online. Gamepass is a service which let you play games that are in the gamepass for no extra costs exept the fe for the gamepass.

    I tried Fortnite it’s the only other online game I have, but I’m pretty sure it takes Xbox live. But it works still to play games online through gamepass, and my sub is still up to date. But when I switch back and forth from console to laptop it quits letting me or her play gamepass games online
