I am having trouble sharing Xbox live across two different accounts.

Unfortunately you can not share the same Xbox account on two consoles at the same time. For both of you to play on two different consoles at the same time would require two different accounts. It doesn't cost anything to create an account for Xbox Live.
However, it will cost BOTH accounts to have Gold subscriptions.

If u reset your xbox one but press (keep all games & apps ) wants you set your xbox back up can u still play the games your friends game shared with you

Does your friend live in the same household as you? If not then what you are doing is actually against the rules.

The "home xbox" feature is meant for sharing games across two different Xboxs in the same household so that you dont have to pay for the same game twice across two consoles you own. It was never meant to share games with friends

Realistically this wouldn’t work, it only works if both of you are sharing on xbox using the home xbox feature and having both accounts on the same xbox. If you plan on playing at same time across two seperate devices it wont work with two seperate accounts.
As mentioned it is advised not to use the same account shared to play at the same time

The same Microsoft Account wouldn't be usable across two gamertags, it's like likely that you may have mistyped your e-mail or used a different e-mail for your original Xbox Live account. Have you had a chance to test different e-mail addresses?
