    Did all of that and still received the 'Something went wrong. Your controller is already up to date.' on the PC. There doesn't look to be any option to revert firmware on the Xbox series x controller. Did Microsoft remove the option to downgrade firmware recently?

    this worked for me, controller now working again on my laptop
    Just as an update - this did the trick. I had to have my nephew bring his Xbox back over to do the firmware downgrade, but once that was done, I was able to reconnect to my PC and play with zero issues.
