How to refund a game code that cannot be used?

I was sent a product key for Xbox One Terraria by a friend who believed I owned an Xbox.

I don't. I play with him and my other friends through Windows 10.

Not knowing that the code was for the Xbox One version of Terraria, I redeemed it, only to find out that I am unable to use it as I do not own the device it's intended for.

Is it possible to refund the code (that has already been redeemed) and send it back to my friend? I don't want his purchase to be permanently lost because I don't own a console as he thought.
