How to move an Xbox account to a different Microsoft account

My boyfriend's son has an xbox that is linked to his Microsoft account and billing information. He wants the xbox account to move to a different Microsoft account that isn't linked to his work account. It would have a different email and billing information. But his son doesn't want to lose all his games/settings etc. Is there a way to do this?

Hi Melissa

I'm afraid this isn't possible. An Xbox account and Microsoft account are the same thing and cannot be separated. The only option would be to give the account to his son, change the email alias and create a new account for himself. But it does some time for an email alias to become available again.

If he does this, make sure he sets up Xbox Family.

You can follow the steps here to change the Microsoft account/email address associated with the gamertag. The setting for the gamertag will remain.

Keep in mind, if the original email address on the account is a Microsoft domain (hotmail, msn, etc.), you will need to keep it on the account as an alias.

you can NOT delete a xbox live account, you can only move it to a different Microsoft Account.

So you will need to move that unwanted xbox live account to a new (temporary) Microsoft Account and after that you will be able to move your GT (xbox live account) to that Microsoft Account.

Be aware that you can only move a xbox live account to a different Microsoft Acocunt when it has been on a console for at least 30 days, without it being downloaded.
