You can use
this link to reach the Redeem your code or gift card page online, or you can go to the
Store on your Xbox One and select the option to Redeem at the bottom of the menu on the left-hand side.

If so, then you get the code by downloading the Xbox app on your smartphone to set up your Series X/S wirelessly as it will give you a code to then enter

I am afraid it's not gonna work in the US if your friend is from a different country. It will only work if you have a friend who will gift the game to you inside the US.

Other than that, to acquire the game license, you would have to purchase it directly from your account instead.
