How to format external SSD to store and play games on Xbox Series X?

I recently purchased the Crucial X6 4TB external storage SSD as I am running out of internal storage. I have an external HDD, but it seems fewer and fewer games are able to be stored on that device with Series X. First, I tested my luck with the external drive on the Xbox and under managed storage devices, it appeared to be formatted for pictures, music, and video only (labeled EFI). I then formatted the SSD on my computer to exFAT, but it is showing the same thing in storage devices when I connected it back to the Xbox and restarted the console. It also does not give me the option to format through this page on the Xbox. This product claimed to be compatible with Xbox, which I suppose it technically is, but is it only compatible as a media storage device, not game storage?

Lastly, I had to also purchase a USB-C to USB-A 3.1 adapter for the SSD, could that be the issue..?

    Thanks!

    :)

    3.0 2Tb Seagate HDD comparability

    Hi,

Your drive will work the same on Series X as it does on Xbox One and you won't need to format it.

However, Series X games or Xbox One games with Series X enhancements will not run from that drive and will either need to be installed internally or to an external SSD designed for Series X/S.

Your hard drive will be too slow for Series X games. They can be stored there, but not run from there.

Will the Xbox Series X be able to use my external SSD

This has been covered and been mentioned as it has been a big concern. Right now, yes you can use your external SSD to play Xbox One and Xbox 360 games but you will not be able to play stored SX games on the external SSD. To be able to able to play SX
games they need to installed on the Series X's SSD not the external one.

    Xbox series s

    Yep.

Just plug the external drive into the series s or x & you're good to go.

If you want to play any games that have series s/x enhancements then that game would need to be stored on the internal drive or the external ssd you can buy.

    Choosing a hardrrive

Fair enough, a slow internet connection is as good excuse as any.

Be aware however that while that drive will work on Series X, you won't be able to play Series X games directly from it. Series X games will require faster access and read speeds. My understanding is that the Series X games can be 'backed up' on an external
drive and then need to copied/moved over to either the internal SSD or the External SSD's that will be available for the machine.

The Series X will read and play Xbox One games from an external drive though.

Xbox one S digital external storage

It depends on what you use as external storage. If you get a regular hard drive or SSD, then any Series S/X optimized games will still need to be moved to the internal storage to play them (Older games can be stored and played from the external drive). If you want to store and play Series S/X optimized games on external storage, you would need on of the expansion cards that were created for the console.
