How to fix greyed out headset chat mixer

Try the following:

1. Examine the headphones, cable and connector for visible defects.

2. Make sure there is no dust or dirt on the headphone jack. To clean the connector, use a cotton swab soaked in alcohol.

3. Check that the Xbox controller is working correctly.

4. Firmly insert the Xbox One Headset connector into the expansion port located under the D-pad and right stick on the controller.

Solution 2:

If you set up a profile for a minor on the console, the Online Privacy & Safety options allow the owner of an adult profile to control who can communicate with the minor profile in Xbox Live chats. In the Online Privacy and Safety section, you can enable chat communication in the child's profile. For players under 17, the default setting is Friends Only.

Solution 3: Re-associate your controller with your profile

1. Press the Xbox  button to open the guide.

2. Select Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories.

3. Select your controller and then the (...) button.

4. Under Assigned to, choose your gamertag.

Solution 4: Check the NAT type of your network

Network Address Translation (NAT) allows you to hide your IP address from devices that are not on your network. For more information about NAT, see the "Current network status" section at:

Solution 5: Try your Xbox One chat headset

To test your headphones, start a group (requires an Internet connection) to check your audio:

1. Sign in to your console.

2. Press the Xbox  button to open the guide.
Under Groups & chats, select Start a group. (You don't need to invite anyone for this test.)

3. Make sure the microphone is not muted in the group chat.
Note: You can use the Y button  on the controller to turn the sound on or off.

4. Make sure the headphones are not muted and the TV volume is high enough.

5. Speak into the microphone. If the headphones are working, you will see the ring around your gamer image light up.

Disconnect the headphones or disconnect the headphone cable from the bottom of the controller and reconnect it firmly.

Check the mute button on the headphone controls to make sure the headphones are not muted.

Turn up the volume. If you use headphones connected to the 3.5mm port, go to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories, then select your controller to adjust the audio options.

Are you using headphones on an Xbox console? If so, which one exactly? or are you using it on a PC or Phone? to find out if the problem stems from the device.

Have you tried the headphones on other devices? to rule out that the fault is in the headset.

1. What type of headset are you using? I mean the make and model?

2. Was it working before?

For the meantime, you can try plugging in the headset cord slowly, and I mean VERY slowly. If you do it right, you should hear static as it’s going in, then it will let you adjust the chat mixer. Additionally, you can turn off the controller and turn on back and see if that helps. Just hold the Xbox logo button for a few seconds then a thing will pop up then click turn off controller then turn your controller back on.
