It sounds like you chose to Buy instead of "Buy as a gift". That means the game is tied to your account and will not be sent as a code. In order to gift a game through Xbox, you have to choose "Buy as a gift" and it will ask you to enter an email address
and then it will email the code.

how was it purchased, was it from a code site, if so log in and it should still be under the account, if purchased from the Microsoft store and your mother bought it with her account then the game is tied to her account automatically and there would be no code.
