    external hard drive not recognize

I have use the hd with the xbox one no problems. It was working with xbox x for awhile, but recently stopped. I have checked all connections, basically went through the troubleshooting steps. External hard drive is still not showing up. The hard drive
connects just using usb port and powered the same way. I can see and hear the external hd turn on, but after that nothing.

External HDD Prevents Xbox1 from getting online?

Hello, I have just newly purchased a 1TB USB 3.0 WD My Passport external HD from BestBuy (was recommended by the customer sales guy, I stated that it was for use for a Xbox1.) Anyways, I hooked this new external drive up to my Xbox1, and noticed some issues
that I cannot seem to find any answers as to how to fix. Namely, every time I connect the HD to the xbox1, it disconnects me from the internet completely. Nothing else has changed. I tested this multiple times with restarting the xbox with the external hd
disconnected, loading a party up, inviting a friend and talking no problem. As soon as I plugged in the external HD, the party chat will lag, and then crash, as well as complete online access. I've tried restarting the X1 with the external HD attached, and
no internet access. I've tried power cycling the Xbox, the router, in every conceivable options of external hd plugged in or not, etc. It results in the same thing, if the device is attached to the xbox, the xbox will not connect online.

Let me add that the hard drive will copy files over completely fine. It is formatted for the xbox1, I have loaded games on the hard drive fine. Its sole problem is the fact that with the external hard drive plugged in, (I have tried every single USB port
on the console, currently plugged into the left side port) the hard drive is getting power, etc.

I've been searching quite a bit on here, on reddit, on google etc and have only seen one other help post considering this, but it contains to the preview dashboard thing which I am not a member of. So, I am pleading with any/every one who may have a possible
answer for this, what can I do to actually use the HD, with the Xbox1, and still maintain an online experience. quite frankly this is a bit ridiculous that an external hard drive is the culprit (unless I am missing something completely here after trying every
other scenario for connectivity issues) to crash the internet on this console. So is there any thing I am missing here? Is there some patch that I missed, or what is going on? Is it this particular Hard drive?

Maybe with my frustration I have missed a post or a solution to this problem, so if that is the case, I apologize for wasting everyones time and if someone could point me in the correct direction to solve this problem that would be amazing.

    Thanks for your time.

Hello frank! An Xbox One X can hold/read up to three USB 3.0 ports and you can hold up to any amount your external HD has.

Thanks for the reply for the usb ports. I am however still having problems with the external HDs. I have one external 8TB for games and have an external 4TB(powered) for movies that the XBOX won't read. However if I use a 2TB(non-powered) HD it reads
it fine.???? any thoughts\suggestions would be much appreciated. thanks

Thanks for the time and response. The xbox 1 x now sees the 5TB HD, however, it does not read the information on HD(movie files-MP4\NTFS). This only happens with a HD larger than 2TB. what am I missing? Thanks for the time. Frank

    Hi there Frank!

Thanks for the reply. The requirements for an external storage drive:

    • It uses a USB 3.0 connection. If you’re using a USB hub, the hub must also be USB 3.0 or later.
    • It has 256 GB or larger storage capacity.
    • It has a partition. Typically, drives come wit a preformatted partition. For more information about partitioning an external hard drive, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.
    • No more than three storage devices are connected to the console at the same time.
The best troubleshooting resource is the one provided by XBF Chris :
Troubleshoot external storage detection on Xbox One.

If the problem persists, try checking out the support forum for the manufacturer of the external drive for more assistance. Another step you can try is using a different USB cable for the external hard drive.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help and time. My 8TB Game HD is fine, the problem I am having is with my 5TB Media HD. XBOX can see it, unfortunately it says that there are no files and there is 0 space available? I have gone through all suggestions and still the same
problem. I have come across a few messages elsewhere about the HD being formatted NTFS and not FAT32. Well I tried using a 2TB (NTFS) HD and it was seen with all the movie files it carried.

    8TB Game Drive............GOOD

    2TB Movie Drive...........GOOD

5TB Movie Drive...........identified but not reading files...????

Thank you for the time and help
