How I fix the red ring issue for my old Xbox 360

Introduction

I have had my Xbox 360 since 2010, and it worked well for many years and gave me a lot of pleasure. Like most things of the life, my old friend did not work well, with the red ring issue.

As a result, I sent Xbox 360, my old friend to a local repair store and it worked again after returning back from repair store a week later. I was happy with that and playing the old games did help me to go through the sad Covid-19 pandemic. I worked
from home most of the time in this year, and I played the game like many year ago.

But the happiness did not last for long, the red-ring issue came back again 1 month ago. For this time, I decided to take care of my old friend myself.

Part 1: Issue Description and Research

First of all, the most important things I need to know are issues that cause the problem, I studied the guide document, public material, blogs online. And as a conclusion, the red-ring issue can happen for 3 reasons:

1. The power adapter is too old and there are much dust inside it, and as a result, it may not work.

2. The solder between the GPU and PCB is weak and not working well.

3. Some of the core IC components of o the PBC are broken.

Part 2: Causes Analysis

After researching on the possible causes of the issue, I need to figure out which of the above causes that caused the red-ring in my Xbox 360. I worked this out with the following steps:

Step 1. Research on Power on status

First try to power on the host, the central light of this host machine can be lit, indicating that there is no problem with the power adapter. Then connecting the HDMI cable, there is 1 red light appears first.

And then after restarting, it turns into 3 red lights, and the host machine automatically shut down in seconds.

The above experiment indicates that the power adapter is working and the causes of the red-ring probably are the solder problem or the chip problem.

Steps 2. Research inside Box

The first thing I need to do is to get the PCB out from the box for checking.

And then I need to Disassemble the heat sink the PCB.

How can we ensure the issue is the solder problem or the GPU itself?

What I do this as following:

Connect the PCB on the host machine and start, and then check the temperature of the GPU itself with the Thermal Imager. As we can see the following image, the GPU itself works, since the Thermal Imager says it via the temperature.





After checking the GPU on the PCB, we are going to check the chips on the main board to figure out if there is obvious broken chip. Fortunately, I found there is an NAND broken, the part number on it is HY27US08281A that I got it online later.

As a result, the causes of the red-ring issue of my Xbox is the solder issue between the GPU and the PCB, and the broken HY27US08281A. So, we will proceed to the fixes on Part 3.

Part 3: Execution Steps

1. Prepare all the tools and chip for replacement.

1.1 NAND, I got the new
HY27US08281A online to replace the broken one.

1.2 Thermal Imager

1.3 Screwdriver (Temperature Monitor)

1.4 Heat Gun (Key Tools for the fixing solder between the GPU and PCB)

1.5 Solder Sucker

2. Fixing Steps

2.1

Place the circuit board on a flat surface and turn on the hot-air gun and hold it about 6 inches above the broken HY27US08281A.

2.2

Pull the component with tweezers and turn the hot-air gun off, after a few seconds.

2.3

Turn on the soldering iron to use it with copper braid to clean the excess solder.

2.4

Place new component on the board.

Solder each component lead with the corresponding pad on the board, using solder and the soldering iron

Turn on the hot-air gun to add heat to the solder GPU and PCB

2.7

Monitor the temperature with Screwdriver and turn off the heat gun unit the Screwdriver says 150 degrees.

Apply Thermal Grease to the heat sink and GPU and put back the heat sink

Put back all the screws and tighten them all.

Finally, restart the machine, it works. Amazing! I am not sure if this is the best way for me or not, but it does save my old friend and my happiness.
