Beyond confused and I am more than proficient in this area, but MS has created a nightmare scenario of confusion with the Xbox One S, and I really hope it's not to capitalize on consumer ignorance.

So all the bullsquat aside when I am playing, for example, Red Dead Redemtion 2, with my 4k/hdr10/2.2hdmi cable all settings either correctly on or off; TV, on my Xbox One S, am I seeing that game in 4k? Regardless of upscaling or any other bullcrap, I want
a Yes or No answer from Microsoft, not a "well it's more complicated but we stole your money" answer... I'll be waiting.

    :)

How does the xbox one s know to upscale or input game info to 4k, if the games are not the 4k version?

Xbox One S has a 1080p output for this game with HDR. You TV upscale input video signal to 4K, if it not a 4K or less.

How does the xbox one s know to upscale or input game info to 4k, if the games are not the 4k version?

    Hi,

There seems to be some confusion here on how 4K content works on the One S console. RandyAU93 is right on the ball here regarding the Xbox One S resolution support.

How does the Xbox one s know to upscale in 4K?

In short if you set the console to 4K in the settings, all games will be
    1080P, upscaled.
True UHD content such as 4K UHD Blu-ray discs and 4K streaming content will play in
    native 4K

Content upscaled to 4K - such as games - isn't the same as running them at native 4K resolution.
Only the Xbox One X can run its 'Enhanced' titles at this high resolution.

The issue with RDR2 on the One S is a little more complicated. The Xbox One S version of this game isn't 1080P, in fact it's more like 864P. It may look worse if you run the console in 4K upscaling mode as both the game and the console will attempt to
    the scale the game.

The following information is taken from
    this Xbox support article

    Native 4K vs. 4K upscaling

When you set your console resolution to 4K UHD, everything on the console—Home, games, and apps—will display at 4K. On Xbox One X, 4K content is displayed in its native 4K resolution, and other content
(like games encoded for 1080p) is upscaled to 4K. Games on Xbox One S also get upscaled to 4K. While typically smoother and more detailed than native 720p or 1080p, upscaled 4K is not as rich and detailed as native 4K.

To set your resolution and upscale everything to 4K, press the Xbox button to open the guide, go to System > Settings > Display & sound > Video
    output
. For TV resolution, select 4K UHD.

    4K in games and apps

You don't have to set your console resolution to 4K to play 4K content. You can set your console to another resolution, such as 1080p, and when a game or app requires 4K (and your TV supports the 4K mode
it wants), it'll automatically switch to 4K. This is good if you want to play 1080p content in its native resolution, but also take advantage of the 4K resolution when playing 4K content.

To set your resolution to a lower resolution but switch to 4K when 4K content is played:

    1. Open the guide and go to System > Settings > Display & sound > Video output and then make sure TV resolution is set to 720p or 1080p.
    2. Select Advanced video settings and make sure Allow 4K is checked.

How does the xbox one s know to upscale or input game info to 4k, if the games are not the 4k version?

Xbox One S outputs game content at 1080p and with an HDR color palette, if the game supports it. So no, you are not seeing it in 4K. If you want to see the compatible game in 4K resolution, you would need to use Xbox One X.

However, Xbox One S will output video content in 4K, such as UltraHD 4K Blu-ray discs and 4K content from streaming services like Netflix.
