If you have a set of headphones plugged in using the port above the HDMI port and you use the HDMI port the XBox recognizes a new output for the video (which is actually just your optical out for your headphones.) If you remove your headphone connection
and just use the HDMI then it won't reset. When you need to use the headphones plug them in when you're at a safe spot to restart the XBox and then unplug them after use. That's the easy fix anyway.

Before you play a video check your HDMI connection, maybe it wiggles free from its housing and when you play a video it doesn't give you audio. Since unplugging it and then plugging it back in fixes it that may be the issue. Let me know how it goes!

Hey, Matictac, This is a problem that happens to me too, this is a very big problem for me to, when I want to switch sources, eg. From PC to Xbox 360.

There's is not much you can do if you have HDMI, when its HD, It thinks that you have pulled the plug out, this means, if you did pull it out, you cannot re-insert in and start playing, you would have to restart.

Can I suggest if you have the HDMI Audio cable plugged in (this one) [View:http://support.microsoft.com/library/images/support/kbgraphics/PUBLIC/EN-US/XBOX/HW/cables/HDMIPackage.gif] that you unplug it and see if the problem persists. When that audio cable
is plugged in, when you change input source from HDMI to anything else then back to HDMI all Xbox 360 consoles do reset, there are no official work-arounds for this issue but by testing this out we can determine the source of the problem easier.

When you have two cables plugged into the Xbox 360. It confuses it because it doesn't know what to do. Its like when you plug an Earthnet cable into your Xbox when you have the adapter plugged in. It doesn't work because its confused.

Now I'm not too sure with capture cards, but I do bellive it needs to be plugged into your TV. I might be wrong but try it and see what happens
