i know in Captains cabin but are the preorder items free or do i still have to buy them?

The preorder items are free, when you go to a weapons/outfit store or a harbormaster store some of the items are already unlocked and you only need to equip them. Some of them must be found in treasure chests. You should get a popup after you redeem the
DLC code telling you where the chests are located, on your radar they'll appear yellow/gold. As well a couple of the DLC's had a location unlocked and you should find that location on your map, the bonus items should be in the yellow/gold chests in those locations.

You should've gotten a preorder DLC code with your game, when you start up disc 1 there should be a tile near the bottom that says something like "additional content", you go to that then select "redeem code" from the list, then select "Ubisoft Code" and
enter your code. Of course you need to be connected to Xbox Live, though I don't think you need a Gold account to unlock the preorder DLC.

If you got the Gamestop version, there should be a piece of paper inside the game case with the code. I'm not sure but you may have to redeem your Uplay code in order to redeem the DLC code, the Uplay code should be on another piece of paper inside the game
case no matter what retailer you bought it from. I don't know how other retailers distributed their DLC codes but if you didn't receive yours I'd recommend contacting that retailer's customer support.
