How do i track an ip address from a theif

I think the first thing you should do is
change the passwordon your Microsoft account, and then
call Microsoftdirectly and notify them about your situation.

Also, I came across this comment in a Reddit topic from awhile ago (I don't know if it'll still help):

With console serial number in hand the police can contact Microsoft Online Services Legal Request Hotline to attempt to get access information such as active IP address, accounts etc.

Talk to your investigating officer, they probably already have protocol for cybercrimes.

"Microsoft will respond to formally served civil subpoenas served on Microsoft’s registered agent in the requesting party’s state and is unable to respond to faxed or mailed requests for civil matters."

hint: don't bother calling or mailing unless you're in local law enforcement.

Unfortunately, there's a high chance the thief would have cleared the accounts after realizing they cant get your details off it without passwords/passkeys, and they may have even pawned it off already.

Also the chances are, if you do try tracking the account to the last IP, it may very well just show your own personal public IP.

The only other way would to be in a party chat with the person and do packet captures and sort through all the data to find the IP's.

But this isnt recommended, you should just follow the standard process, follow this guide on what to do if Xbox is stolen

Report to the police, and then claim from insurance.

sorry to hear. First of all you shoul
as soon as possible change your password (and of your son) to prevent further damage!! Then you should contact the police, because it is their job to investigate the matter. You won't be able to catch the thief even with an IP address. But they can.

Microsoft may have been an IPS in the 90's, but are not now. Microsoft can not get a home address from the IP address. ONLY THE INTERNET PROVIDER. Each cable modem that the cable company provides is attached to an IP address. This is how they track the home
address that MS will provide.
