If I may ask, may I know the exact error message upon attempting to play both games online?

Kindly try to manage your Xbox privacy settings:

NOTE: If your account is a child account, you won't be able to change your own settings. You will need assistance from an Organizer/Parent account.

A child account is registered on the birthdate 21 years old and below upon the account's first creation

An adult account is registered on the birthdate 22 years old and older upon the account's first creation

Sign in to your Microsoft account at Xbox.com.

Select your gamertag, and then select the More actions button (…).

Select Xbox settings, and then select Privacy & online safety.

Note Because you’re accessing sensitive info, you may have to enter your password or PIN.

Select either the Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10 devices Online Safety tab or the Privacy tab.

Review the current settings and preferably update all of the options as "Allow" and "Everyone", and then select Submit to save the changes.

Note You must select Submit at the bottom of the page before leaving or switching to another tab. If you don't submit the changes before you move to the other tab, your changes won't be saved.

You can do that on any system that can do online. You don't need required online to do that (I'm curious just how you think not requiring internet but allowing internet would some how prevent that?).

So, for example you could set that up for PS4 games. But if they don't have online, they still can play. So basically the PS4 can do the same thing and can do something the xbox can't, play when internet is gone.

Don't confuse needing a system to be able to do something with needing a system to be required to do something.

So why is required a good thing when it offers no actual advantage and only a disadvantage?

Do you and this one friend live in the same region and do both of you share the same service provider? There may be an issue transferring data from the central server of the service provider to Xbox Live servers or vice versa.

Does this prevent you from joining or accepting party invites or game invites from this friend or is everything normal besides the online status being displayed incorrectly? Can you play with each other directly or do you need to have a mutual friend host?

I've seen something like this in the past, but it normally resolves itself and doesn't prevent from playing together, just the status is displayed incorrectly. How long has this been going on for?
