How do I make my child the adminstrator on his laptop in Microsoft Family?

The parental controls are obstructing getting my son's laptop set up for school. I either need to make him the administrator or remove him from our family group.

I cannot find that option in Microsoft Family, which sends me in infuriating circles trying to figure it out.

Conversely, Microsoft Family tells me I cannot remove him from our MS family and that I need to contact the family organizer...which has always been me.

Frankly, MS Family is a bit infuriating.

    Thank you for any help.

    :)

How do I make my child the adminstrator on his laptop in Microsoft Family?

    Thanks for the reply.

I am using the Microsoft Family Website and I am logged in on my account as the family organzier, the only family organizer our family account has ever had.

Unless they are hidden somewhere very obscure, I cannot find where I can give my son administrator access to his own computer for school. It feels as if there are a layer of controls that are being hidden from me, the parent, for my own family account.

When I try to just remove him from the family account, I get the following message:

You can't remove [Son] from the family group

Family members under statutory age need an adult's consent to join a family group. Only the adult that granted consent for [son] can remove this family member. Ask the family organizer who granted [son] consent to remove [son] from the family group.

This is pretty infuriating and starting to make me really wish I never started the family account in the first place.

Verify Family Organizer Status: Double-check that you are indeed the designated Family Organizer for your Microsoft Family account. Ensure that you are using the correct Microsoft account credentials associated with the family group.

Review Microsoft Family Settings: Visit the Microsoft Family website and explore the available settings and options. Look for any sections related to device management, administrator privileges, or parental controls. Familiarize yourself with the interface to ensure you are not overlooking any hidden features.

Contact Microsoft Support: If you're unable to find the necessary options or encounter any difficulties, it's best to contact Microsoft Support directly. They have dedicated support channels for Microsoft Family users and can assist you in resolving the issue. They will have access to specific account details and can guide you through the process of granting administrator access to your son's computer.

Thank you for contact us! I'm Anderson, an Independent Consultant and a Microsoft user like you.

    Good evening

Family Organizer Account: Ensure that you are logged in with the Microsoft account that serves as the Family Organizer. Only the Family Organizer has the authority to manage family settings.

Family Safety Website: Visit the Microsoft Family Safety website (https://account.microsoft.com/family/) and sign in with your Family Organizer account.

Account Management: Locate your child's account within the family group and click on it. Look for options related to account management or permissions.

Admin Privileges: Review the settings and permissions assigned to your child's account. There might be an option to grant administrative privileges or elevate their account to the administrator level.

My child sees me in family group, I do not see him

    Hi Larysa,

My name is Aileen, and I’m an Xbox Expert and a user. I know how frustrating it is to deal with Microsoft Family Safety when it feels like things aren't syncing correctly. Just a heads-up, this is a public forum, and I can’t access or make changes to any accounts. I'm just here to help with the best info available.

Based on what you described, it sounds like there's a desync issue between your Microsoft Family group and how it's displaying across devices. This can sometimes happen when the child account was initially created or connected from another ecosystem (like Google) and wasn't properly finalized or synced with Microsoft Family on the organizer's side.

    Here’s what I recommend trying:

Go to https://account.microsoft.com/family and sign in with your Microsoft organizer account.

Make sure you're on the same Microsoft domain as your child's account (e.g., both @outlook.com, or at least both Microsoft accounts).

If you still don’t see your child listed, it’s possible the family group was set up under a different Microsoft account. You might want to double-check for any alternate email addresses you’ve used in the past, just in case.

From your child’s account (on his laptop), go to https://account.microsoft.com/family as well and try to view the organizer from his side.

If he sees you listed, try this:

Go to https://family.microsoft.com from his device

Click on the three dots beside your name and see if there's an option like “Leave family group” (Note: This might not be available because only adults can leave, so you may have to manage this from your side).

Since he can’t leave and you can’t see him to remove him, you may need Microsoft Support to forcibly fix the family group from their side.

To escalate the issue directly to Microsoft, go here:

    https://support.microsoft.com/account-billing/m...

    Let them know:

"The child account shows the organizer, but the organizer account does not list the child. The child cannot leave the family, and the organizer cannot remove the child."

They should be able to investigate and help clean this up.

I hope this helps clear the roadblock so your child can get back to playing Minecraft.

Please let me know how it goes or if you need help with the next steps.

    Thank you!

    Aileen

Thank you for your reply!. I have encounterd a new problem, the childs gamertag wont show in the settnings. do you know how i make that happen? sorry for bothering you
Did you add the child's account to the family group as on this page?
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12417/microsoft-account-add-members-to-family

Also, make sure you're logged into the adult account that has that child account under it, to change these settings.
